Frequently Asked Questions About Refrigerator Filter Lights
Why doesn't the light reset automatically when I put in a new filter?
Most refrigerators (except GE models equipped with RFID microchips) do not have sensors that detect water purity. Instead, they use a simple 180-day internal timer. The refrigerator has no way of knowing a new cartridge has been inserted until you trigger the manual reset sequence.
What if my filter light still won't reset after holding the buttons?
Make sure you hold the buttons continuously for a full 5 seconds. If using a GE RPWFE/XWFE refrigerator, an aftermarket filter without an RFID chip will trigger an error ("ERR") and lock out reset until a chipped filter is inserted.
How often should refrigerator water filters actually be replaced?
Manufacturers and NSF certification standards recommend replacement every 6 months or after dispensing 200–300 gallons (whichever occurs first) to prevent bacterial growth and maintain lead/chlorine reduction.
